Business Owners Approve Placement Of Prince Mortimer Trail Marker On Their Property!

On April 25th, 2021, I started a journey towards getting Prince Mortimer honored for his Revolutionary War service. That evolved into also fighting to just get acknowledgement that he existed, that his life mattered...something that was never done while he was alive.

Over the past 19 months, I've had wins and losses; but ultimately, the Connecticut Freedom Trail agreed with me. On October 27th, they not only agreed that his life mattered, they decided to create a Prince Mortimer Trail within the Connecticut Freedom Trail!

I provided the state with 5 locations for consideration as to where Prince Mortimer Freedom Trail Markers should likely be placed. Two of those locations are owned by the state (Wethersfield DMV and Old New-Gate Prison), so no additional approval was required. But the other 3 locations are now private business; the state needed permission from the business owners to place markers on their property.

Well, the state informed me this week that ALL 3 REMAINING BUSINESS GAVE THEIR APPROVAL!!!!

I'm humbled and overwhelmed with joy over this! As this evolves, I can't wait to share with you all the unveiling dates!

P.S. As you know, I'm still digging into if Prince Mortimer's body was sent to the Yale School of Medicine, as that could add a 6th Prince Mortimer Trail marker location if we determine he was. We continue to walk...more to come.

Thank you all for sticking with me on this journey. I truly appreciate you all more than you know.

John Mills

Originally from San Diego, John Mills is a technologist by trade, but an equity advocate and independent scholar by passion. The descendant of both southern and northern enslaved, John focuses on unearthing little known people and stories of this country’s history in slavery and the transatlantic slave trade. John presents research through the lens and perspective of a descendant, with intent to inspire understanding and empathy, a means to inspire good, God fearing people, now armed with information, to look into whether they may be unwittingly aligning to biases resulting from the reverberating effects of a past time. John is a member of the Connecticut Freedom Trail and a member of the Webb Deane Stevens Museum Council. John is also working with an international team funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) in an effort to deliver transformational impact on digital methods in cultural institutions...a means to decolonize museums. Finally, John is working with the state of Connecticut, business leaders and scholars in Middletown, CT to honor and memorialize a former enslaved individual by the name of Prince Mortimer.
