Lecture: Stories of Connecticut's Black Patriots

  • John P. Webster Library 12 South Main Street West Hartford, CT, 06107 United States (map)

On Sunday, May 3, 2026 at 11:30am, John Mills will be giving a lecture for the John P. Webster Library, in West Hartford, CT.

Although many Black men served during the Revolutionary War, the Militia Act of 1792 made it illegal for Black men to enlist in state militias. The 1862 Militia Act changed all of that, leading to the creation of Connecticut’s 29th and 30th Colored Regiments during the Civil War. During this presentation, Mills will delve into the many unknown stories representing the events and social conditions that shaped perspectives in Connecticut from the Revolutionary War into the Civil War.

We will share the registration link once it is available.
