Avenues to Freedom: Exploring Wallingford's Black History Trail
In 2020, The Wallingford Historic Preservation Trust embarked on research into the Black enslaved population who lived locally and were an important part of the town’s early history from 1790 to 1840. In this talk, representatives from the Trust will discuss the homes built by Wallingford’s founding families and their slave-owning past. In addition, guest speaker John Mills, a Genealogist and President/Founder of the Alex Breanne Corporation, will share his research to include unknown stories of enslaved individuals into the landscape of our communities and his own family’s history of slavery. WHPT President Jerry Farrell, Jr. notes, “Black Americans have done much to lift up our country—all those contributions need to be celebrated and made visible during Black History Month.”
