John Mills will be leading an in-person seminar at Wesleyan University’s Wasch Center. The seminary will discuss Connecticut’s enslaved, with a focus on the life of Prince Mortimer, as well as that of Nicholas Monroe.
John is leading the first of 6 seminars offered as part of an adult education Fall program at Wesleyan University. The education program is called Wasch Seminars and the course is called, “Stories of the Enslaved in Connecticut.” The description of the course is as follows:
“One of the best kept secrets in local history is that Connecticut was among the largest slave-owning colonies in the late 18th century. More than 1500 enslaved people worked in fields and households throughout the region, including in Middletown. Only recently have local researchers—amateur and professional alike—stepped forward to tell the stories of family members and others from long-ago generations. Five such investigators will share what they have uncovered.”
John’s seminar will occur on Thursday, October 26th @ 4:30pm. The 5 remaining seminars will occur on each following Thursday, hosted by 5 other Connecticut historians.
