Lecture: Stories of Connecticut’s Black Patriots

  • Fairfield Museum 370 Beach Road Fairfield, Connecticut, 06824 United States (map)

On Sunday September 20, 2026 at 1pm, John Mills will be giving a talk at the Fairfield Museum in Fairfield, Connecticut.

Although many Black men served during the Revolutionary War, the Militia Act of 1792 made it illegal for Black men to enlist in state militias. The 1862 Militia Act changed all of that, leading to the creation of Connecticut’s 29th and 30th Colored Regiments during the Civil War. During this presentation, Mills will delve into the many unknown stories representing the African American men who served during the Revolutionary War, and the lineage of service within their families that continued into the Civil War.

We will share the registration link once it is available.
