John Mills & Dolly Marshall

On Saturday, June 15th, 2024, The New Haven Museum in collaboration with Connecticut’s Old State House will host Historical Preservation Activist and Historian from New Jersey, Dolly Marshall! Ms. Marshall will be premiering her new documentary film, "Champion for Freedom: The Reverend Alexander Heritage Newton Story." The film details the life and times of former 29th Connecticut Colored Regiment soldier, Alexander Herritage Newton.

The documentary presents Alexander's upbringing in North Carolina to an enslaved father and free mother, his work in support of the Underground Railroad, his abolitionists efforts in New York and the many historical events he would find himself in the midst of in his pursuit of equality for people of color. The documentary will also describe his life in New Jersey after the Civil War, including becoming an influential official in the AME Church.

Prior to introducing Ms. Dolly Marshall, Connecticut-based genealogist and President of the Alex Breanne Corporation, John Mills, will provide an overview of Connecticut's role in the Civil War and the series of events that led up to the creation of the 29th Connecticut Colored Regiment.
