Lecture: Freedom’s Unfinished Promise

  • Central Connecticut State University 1615 Stanley Street New Britain, CT, 06053 United States (map)

On March 20th, 2026, John Mills will be presenting a lecture at Central Connecticut State University. The lecture is entitled, Freedom’s Unfinished Promise.

Mills will examine the ideals of the Declaration of Independence through the lived reality of enslaved people in Revolutionary-era America. Drawing on Connecticut history and descendant-led research, this talk explores how the language of liberty, equality, and natural rights stood in stark contradiction to a system that continued to deny freedom to those who helped secure it.

This lecture will be part of a larger conference focusing on America’s 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The conference will be entitled, “CT 1776.”

A registration link will be provided here once one is availabile.
