Lecture: Connecticut, Color and the Fight for Freedom

  • Wood Human Services Center 330 Park Avenue Bloomfield, CT, 06002 United States (map)

On May 14, 2026 at 6:30pm, John Mills will be giving a lecture at the Wood Human Services Center in Bloomfield, CT.

Although many Black men served during the Revolutionary War, the Militia Act of 1792 made it illegal for Black men to enlist in state militias. The 1862 Militia Act changed all of that, leading to the creation of Connecticut’s 29th and 30th Colored Regiments during the Civil War. During this presentation, Mills will delve into the many unknown stories representing the African American men who served during the Revolutionary War, and the lineage of service within their families that continued into the Civil War.

We will share the registration link once it is available.
