On April 9th, 2024 from 6 - 8pm, the The Mattatuck Museum will be hosting Waterbury Public School Students in their annual Artrageous 2024 District-Wide Art Exhibit!
The event showcases hundreds of pieces of art from Waterbury Public School students from grades Pre-K through 12th grade. While at the event, students can sign up for after school and summer enrichment programs. There are also colleges recruiting for fine arts education and career readiness support.
There will also be many fun items for kids, including crafts, ballon animals, cotton candy and popcorn. There will be a DJ as well as performances from local musicians.
Representing the Alex Breanne Corporation and the coalition of many other partners, John Mills will have a table providing information on the Fortune Mural Project. This initiative aims to create a large-scale mural in Waterbury to honor Fortune, an 18th-century enslaved man whose story is a significant, yet often overlooked part of Connecticut’s history. After his death in 1798, Fortune's bones were used as a training tool and eventually as a museum artifact, not laid to rest until 2013 at Riverside Cemetery. The mural in honor of Fortune will be completed by a Greater-Waterbury based professional artist, Katiana Jarbath-Smith, along with help from local emerging artists.
We have secured $18,000 towards the total cost of $30,000 for the mural. We need to raise an additional $12,000. To learn more or to donate, please visit FortuneMural.org.
Please swing by the Mattatuck Museum on April 9th @ 6pm to say hi! We would love to see you!
