In The Footsteps of KINGS
Coming November 22, 2025
On November 24, 1865, the 29th Connecticut Colored Regiment returned to their home state, with the expectation of being welcomed as heroes. They had been the first regiment to enter the burning capital of the Confederacy, and they stayed to see President Abraham Lincoln tour the devastation.
On their return to Connecticut, they made stops in New Orleans and New York; both cities celebrated them as heroes. But when they arrived home to Connecticut, they learned that the citizens of the state had recently voted to not allow black men to vote. They stood at Connecticut's Old State House as the Governor apologized to the men. They were then given a parade through the primary streets of Hartford.
Since then, their arrival and parade have been erased from history. This short film highlights their return from the Civil War, focusing on the parade route they took through the streets of Hartford, and the buildings they would have passed along the parade route that still exist today.
