Although many Black men served during the Revolutionary War, the Militia Act of 1792 made it illegal for Black men to enlist in state militias. The 1862 Militia Act changed all of that, leading to the creation of Connecticut’s 29th and 30th Colored Regiments during the Civil War. During this presentation, Mills will delve into the many unknown stories representing the events and social conditions that shaped perspectives in Connecticut from the Revolutionary War into the Civil War.
